Emma slowly removed the photograph from the envelope.
Victoria lunged forward.
“Don’t!”
Too late.
Emma held the picture high enough for everyone to see.
Gasps exploded across the room.
The photograph showed Victoria entering a luxury hotel with another man.
Not her husband.
The date was clearly visible.
Last Friday night.
“No…” Victoria whispered.
Her husband, Richard, stepped forward from the crowd.
His face was frozen in disbelief.
“You told me you were visiting your mother.”
Victoria couldn’t speak.
Emma looked directly into her eyes.
“For years, you humiliated people because you thought money protected you.”
Victoria’s knees nearly gave out.
Richard took the photograph from Emma’s hand.
Then he pulled another envelope from his jacket.
Victoria stared.
“What is that?”
Richard looked at her coldly.
“I was about to ask you the same question.”
He opened the envelope.
Inside were divorce papers.
The room erupted with whispers.
Victoria stood speechless.
Everything she had built was collapsing in front of hundreds of witnesses.
Emma turned toward her wheelchair.
“You know something funny?” she said.
Victoria looked up.
Emma smiled.
“I could always walk.”
“What?”
“I spent two years pretending.”
The crowd gasped again.
Victoria stared in shock.
Emma leaned closer.
“I wanted to know who would show kindness when they thought I was powerless.”
Victoria’s eyes filled with panic.
Emma straightened her dress.
“And tonight, you gave me the answer.”
She walked through the crowd as everyone stepped aside.
No one followed Victoria.
Everyone watched Emma leave.
For the first time in years, Victoria Hayes stood completely alone.
